Coolant smell is slowly becoming annoying

Just hit 40k miles, and probably the best Duramax I have ever driven is starting to smell too sweet. No noticeable loss in coolant, and I know a pin drop of coolant can be noticeable in a hurricane. Most noticeable from the passenger side wheel well. Going to pull the skid plate when I get a minute, but I always appreciate any opinions. Never had a coolant issue on a Duramax in 1 million+ miles.

Hopefully it's not something big. Might even be covered under power train warranty. I had a water pump once replaced under power train.

40k, your getting shit done with that rig.

So in some previous model Duramaxes there was a common problem with the seal at the connection of the downpipe to the exhaust pipe. It would leak exhaust, especially during a regen and it would cause that smell coming from passenger side due to the connection in that location. Might be why your coolant level isn't changing.

Some people were able to tighten that clamp and seal it back up. Others had the seal/ pipe replaced.

Previously the dealership said I was “not smelling what I was smelling”. Went to the dealership 2 weeks ago. Water pump is dead, and my oil cooler is done. Literally my entire coolant system is full of oil. Parts are on back order because this is becoming a “pandemic”

52k miles 2024, probably a bad batch of parts

Sorry to hear that! There's definitely been plenty of articles and videos on this lately. Here's a good video discussing the issue and showing the extensive tear down for repairs for some perspective.

That sucks, sorry. I literally just posted a heads up about this in the HD section a couple weeks ago. In the video they said it seems to be happening at around 40k miles. Seemed like a big deal to me when I came across it. Most people aren't logging 40k in a year. Wondering if it turns out to be a larger spread problem then people think.

Bad parts will always go bad given enough time.

From what I have heard, there is parts shortage specifically related to this nonsense. Not a huge fan of lawyers, but this will probably end up being a legal issue. God knows what the internals on my engine have had to deal with, all because an accountant circumvented an actual engineer.

Full disclosure, I am an accredited Electrical/Embedded Software engineer, minor in mechanical. My opinions will definitely be skewed

This motor has been around and fairly reliable for a good amount of time. Only reason for failure is cutting corners/cheaper suppliers. Their answer is Dawn dish soap, and me fighting to get parts replaced(radiator, heater core, turbo lines) that will never be right. Service bulletin is a joke.

I think you should definitely seek a buyback through your applicable lemon law. I know that a lawyer will get more attention than just a regular customer after 30 days, but it costs $ to find out!

I just paid a lawyer $10k on a business dispute. A couple letters back and forth and the opposition now agrees the contract stands as it was originally written. I also wrote the fucken letters. I figured that was about $2k for every 30 minutes the lawyer spent to prove I was right all along..........LMFAO.....I love this America ride (TK)!

Fortunately I have a law firm through my business, really sad that I have stayed loyal for as long as I have. My family is GM to the core(many union in their plants) Driving anything else to the Wilmington plant in the 90’s would score a flat tire. Shouldn’t be this way, loyal customers pay anywhere between $75-$100k+, for these trucks, why? I feel your pain

I wouldn’t care so much if this was not the best riding HD truck I have ever driven. Perfect compromise for exactly what I need, then pump up the bags for the horses and whatnot

Yeah, I'll stick with mine for a while. I haven't had any major issues, just a lot of little things and trips to the dealer. I'll just keep raising hell until they get a clue and bring back some quality..l
