Bourbon Talk

Many of the Buffalo Trace choices are the go to.
Never had a Japanese whisky
Give it a go. You may be surprised. I also like the Buffalo trace distillery. Blantons, Stagg, Eh Taylor! Great juice. I use eagle rare to make homemade bottles of vanilla extract. Very versatile and extremely drinkable.

A few years ago I got this Old Forester gift set for Christmas. It was a great way to test some Bourbon out. Of course, I forgot which one i liked the best, but believe it was the 1910.

Old Forester 1910 and Knob Creek 9yr single barrel are my two go-to’s that are readily available. Old Forester 1920 is also good if you prefer the higher proof.

Received the Still Austin BiB Blue Corn for Christmas and have been impressed with it but it’s a seasonal release. Tried their cask strength and liked that as well.

I've sampled a few bottles of the Blackened Whisky that is by members of the band Metallica in conjunction with some well known distillers. It's a Bourbon base with a blend of rye and other hand selected whiskies. It's aged blasting selected tracks of Metallic tunes into the barrels, which is part of the marketing gimmick and you can look up the tracks used for each bottle.

I'd say it's more like a Canadian blend, but it's decent Whisky for $30 bottle. They have some new premium blends that go for up to $115 bottle but I've never tried them.

Second, I know this is a long share, but I think it's pretty spot on. I'm a proud Explorer.

Whisk(e)y lovers come in many forms, but after thousands of drams and countless conversations, I’ve noticed five distinct types.

These archetypes capture nearly all whiskey enthusiasts, each with their own unique approach to enjoying the spirit.

The Five Types of Whisk(e)y Lovers:
• Sentinel
• Explorer
• Bard
• Alchemist
• Barbarian

The Sentinel honors tradition and heritage, seeking spirits that have been refined over generations. For them, the best pour is classic, distinguished, and perfected long ago.

• Philosophy: If it’s not broken, don’t fix it.
• Ideal Whiskey: Traditional, refined, and made with generational craftsmanship.
• Strengths: Deep respect for history and high standards for quality.
• Common Mistakes: Resistant to new styles, dismissive of experimentation.
• At Their Best: Knowledgeable, passionate about legacy brands, and a walking encyclopedia of whiskey history.
• At Their Worst: Stubborn, unwilling to try new things, and overly dismissive of innovation and doing it "wrong".

The Explorer craves fresh flavors, innovative distilleries, and the thrill of new bottles. For them, the best spirit is probably something they haven't tried—yet.

• Philosophy: The grass is always greener on the other side.
• Ideal Whiskey: The next rare bottle, a cutting-edge experimental release, or an obscure distillery.
• Strengths: Open-minded, adventurous, and a treasure trove of whiskey discoveries.
• Common Mistakes: Can be dismissive of traditional styles, always chasing the next big thing.
• At Their Best: Educates others on new and exciting bottles, pushes the boundaries of whiskey appreciation.
• At Their Worst: Never satisfied, prone to overlooking great classics in favor of the unknown.

The Alchemist loves experimentation, building, tweaking, and transforming spirits into creative cocktails and exquisite blends. For them, the best spirit is a solid building block for bold creations.

• Philosophy: This is great, but I can make it even better.
• Ideal Whiskey: A solid foundation that allows for creativity—like single malts for blending, or a high-proof bourbon for cocktails.
• Strengths: Inventive, open to new techniques, enjoys pushing the boundaries of whiskey.
• Common Mistakes: Overcomplicates things, sometimes forgetting to appreciate whiskey as it is.
• At Their Best: Crafts incredible new experiences, brings new life to overlooked whiskeys.
• At Their Worst: Can be dismissive of purists and obsessed with tweaking things unnecessarily.

The Bard drinks for the spirit of good company and cheers-worthy tales. They believe the best bottle comes with a story that’s magnificent enough to gather friends and spark an unforgettable moment.

• Philosophy: The most important spirit isn’t in our glass.
• Ideal Whiskey: Any bottle that sparks great conversation and memorable nights.
• Strengths: Charismatic, inclusive, makes whiskey approachable and fun.
• Common Mistakes: Can prioritize the social aspect over the actual whiskey.
• At Their Best: Brings people together, ensures whiskey is always part of a great time.
• At Their Worst: Can be more interested in the event than the whiskey itself.

The Barbarian values simplicity, favoring spirits that are unpretentious, direct, and deeply familiar. For them, the best drink is the one that doesn’t need to be over thought—it just hits right, every time.

• Philosophy: Put your pinky down - it’s whiskey.
• Ideal Whiskey: A familiar, reliable pour that doesn't need any pomp and circumstance.
• Strengths: Straightforward, knows what they like, doesn’t get caught up in trends.
• Common Mistakes: Can be dismissive of complex flavors, resistant to trying new things.
• At Their Best: Cuts through the noise, reminding everyone that whiskey is meant to be enjoyed, not analyzed.
• At Their Worst: Stubbornly sticks to one style, unwilling to explore beyond their comfort zone.

Most people don’t need to pick and present whiskey at a professional level. But when you understand the fundamentals, it can open a lot of doors.

No matter what type of whiskey lover you are, there is one rule that binds us all:

"The best whiskey is the whiskey you like to drink, the way you like to drink it."

Daily is crown
Shelf is Buffalo Trace
Friday night is Whistle Pig 10 year
Great lineup! I'm not much into Crown but will probably give it another go at some point. I really like Whistle pig especially when I can get my hands on a 15yr, but 10 is delicious!

I've had a bottle, not bad stuff. I like the marketing gimmick. Probably is just that, but a fun story and bottle to share with friends.

This is great. I am definitely a blend of explorer and bard. "The most important spirit is not in our glass".

Being from Kentucky, all this talk about Crown is making me twitch 🤣🤣🤣

Daily for me is Makers 46
Friday night is Blanton’s over single cube
Special occasions -IW Harper 15yo, Rowan’s Creek, or Eagle Rare 10yo

By the way, 95% of the world’s bourbon comes from Kentucky. The rest isn’t fit to drink! 🍹

🤣🤣🤣

can't find blantons or eagle rare very often in my area. Texas being an allocated state mean's that when you do find them you're paying double if not more than msrp.

Love Makers Mark also. I just got a limited release Makers "The Lost Recipe". It's delicious.

Also, very allocated in Florida. Occasionally I can find a Blantons at the Winn Dixie liquor store at cost for $80 otherwise it's $150. We should have been more supportive during prohibition. HAHA
