Oil Consumption

I’m going though a couple issues with less than 1k miles left on my 3yr,36k warranty. https://www.chevyzr2.com/threads/low-oil-check-headlight-indicator.3214/

1st oil change at 13,500/0% oil life remaining no problems. For me, bought used with 3500 miles on it,
2nd oil change at 23,500 just hit change oil soon the day before my appointment and low oil light came on and I needed to add a quart.
3rd oil change at 30k and it was at 20% oil life remaining but 2 quarts low. Topped off and took it in a couple weeks later with odo at about 33,500.
1000 miles since last change and already 1/2 qt low.

Looking around found that the AC Delco OW-30 volume loss to vaporization is 13%. Friend is an Amsoil Rep and their vaporization of their Signature Select OW-20 is 8%. Regardless if GM refuses to replace my engine or not I’ll be running Amsoil signature in mine going forward. If they wind up ordering an engine I’ll be putting Amsoil oil and filter in the front seat when I drop it off.

JMHO but something is wrong with these engines eating oil; I have a 2004 GMC with a 5.3, has 320,000 miles on it and I don't use any oil between changes, or at least it's imperceptible and unable to measure it's such a small amount.

If your running intervals that long, I would expect oil consumption and likely lower engine life. But some people only make it 1000, so there's that!

I'll ship you my used oil with Mobil 1 0W20 at 3k miles to take the sting out of that consumption if you want. You just need to pay shipping and hazmat.

My Cadillac XT5 has no problem with those intervals and GM has been bragging for years from the marketing front that you only change it when the indicator tells you GM oils guaranteed for xx,xxx miles etc. my Amsoil rep has no problem doing 10k intervals as the guarantee their product for 20-25k miles. Now they say…”it’s nothing to worry about….” Perfect timing for their 6.2 recall yesterday since mine is already scheduled for Tuesday.

There's no remedy for the recall for customer rigs. I just picked up my rig from dealer for trim work. They haven't even gotten directives to fix the ones on the lot, just to freeze sales. Maybe they'll do your's anyway.

I talked directly to the service manager and one of the things he said was the problems persist with long change intervals. He said he would never run more than 3k intervals. He said read the manual and all the caveats about long intervals. He said long intervals were to "lower ownership" costs, but it does the opposite. He has 4 6.2L motors in his personal fleet, one is a track rig that he runs Amsoil in and he only runs it for a few hours before he changes it.

I actually mentioned this post and he rolled his eyes and said "good luck with that"! Give him a shout, his name is Mike and he's at Sands Chevrolet in Glendale, Arizona.

Article I read said affected fix is replace the engine.

The picture in that article says replace engine shows an old campaign number to replace engine due to oversized lifter bores. I haven't see any procedure out that says to do anything if code P0016 is set....it says to not proceed with changing oil.

I don't believe that the dealers even have any idea of what is going on yet as AXE suggested from his SA. This shit is too off the cuff and not enough time has passed to get the info out there to anyone....which may be by design to appease the NHTSA.

I thought the 0001 version of the recall, the one that went to dealerships, says flat out what to do for vehicles on their lots. I believe there are steps and PNs in that version of the recall.
