My salesman sent me this picture yesterday and asked me if I was interested in this Colorado ZR2 Bison. I feel like I should buy it and put a topper on it and use it for a hunting rig. It would be easier to load my dog and head out than to haul the sxs and go through that CF just to chase some birds. I will say, I get into a few places that are tight and it might take a beating, whereas the sxs doesn't.

Must not have some of the extra options, cause it was stickered at $53k.

Wrong reference, they have a standard black ZR2 that is $53k. The Bison is $63k, which is what I've seen previously.

Something like this, but I'd want it to come up off the frame with beefy brackets to support the 125+ lbs of weight from tire/wheel bouncing down the trail.

It seems like for you AXE you should sell the 1500 and get the Colorado. Then you’ll have the HD for work and Colorado for driving and off roading, the best of both. The 1500 is in that odd spot where it’s ok at either but not particularly good at anything.

depends on what you're using the truck for... I don't like hitting my head on the smaller colorado (had a 2017) but I think these are nearly as big as the 80's fullsize...

I've been thinking about selling my 1500 for 6 months, but haven't been able to force myself. It's just too much fun to drive. Probably the most fun truck I've had since my 1997 S10 ZR2.

I really don't put on a lot of miles, so having two trucks is a real waste of money if you factor in all the maintenance, insurance, depreciation.

Probably the dumbest financial decision I've made, but it was largely cause I sold my previous 24 2500HD to my boy. Coukd have traded in on my 2500HD at the time, buy i only had it for 9 months. trying to get my other boy to buy the 1500, but he doesn't like the idea of making payments (smart). Even though I told him I'd sell it to him for $35k. He likes his tuner car though. Been modifying it up for a 4 years.

I drove one last fall, they have a more compact interior for sure, but it was really comfortable. I'm 6 feet and 225 and didn't feel cramped at all. In fact I thought the ergonomics were great cause of how easily everything is accessible. You wouldn't know for sure until you ran it awhile. I will say, I think this is the best iteration of the ZR2 for offraod use by a mile, I thought the 2.7L motor was a bit weak for turning those 35s.

I have the Colorado and the HD, and have had two 1500 Z’s…but I traded the last 1500 on the 2500 z

the Colorado is the most “complete” off-road setup of the three in my humble opinion. I don’t have the bison nor would I get that package if I bought another Colorado - it simply doesn’t need it and the additional weight for the motor is a negative. The size is just right for off-road fun, hunting, and going damn near anywhere while being able to still haul dogs, gear, guns, etc (within reason, it’s not four guys to elk camp pulling a sxs…that’s what the HD is for 🤠). It “looks” the part too, vs the 1500 I always felt kind of blends in a bit (that’s also a good thing too). After three rear main seals, it’s been great for 4k miles or so.

What I miss from the 1500 - I really enjoyed the 3.0 diesel in the 1500, in 25,000 miles it was flawless for me, smooth powertrain, had solid fuel mileage. I appreciated the 1500 cab size, space, and additional bed storage. Suspension was butter smooth (maybe a bit too soft at times) - the bed was easily accessible and the overall truck size was extremely manageable in any setting. Colorado is getting a few MPG better than the 6.2 so the overall range isn’t much better here, probably a wash.

What I won’t miss - the 6.2 was certainly fun for a bit, the small tank and atrocious mileage was a deal breaker for me. combined with the potential for lifter or whatever engine issues, I traded for a 3.0 at 14k miles as I felt like I could deal with a DEF sensor now and again vs getting a new motor. The 3.0 drank DEF pulling / under load for me, normal driving it used very little.

Colorado nor the 3.0 will win a stop light to stoplight shootout with a teenager. that simply wasn’t why I bought either, i would buy something else entirely if thst were my objective 😅 Ultimately, I wanted daily drivability and something that excels for off grid hunting and farm use. Either are very good IMO, the HD is for the heavy lifting tasks.

Your mileage may vary, I’m not looking for a debate here, just giving my personal experiences and thoughts.
