200k Dealer Warranty Advice

Hello Everyone,

So the dealer I normally purchase from offers a 20 year/200k mile powertrain warranty free of charge with the purchase of a new vehicle. Terms are very reasonable, all maintenance must be documented and can be done at a mechanic of your choice. Oil changes can be self performed as long as there are receipts and a detailed log of miles and intervals.

Here is my Dilemma the dealership was supposed to the receive the ZR2 I’m interested in last Sunday, But it been delayed so I have been keeping my options open. I found the exact same truck at another dealer for $3,200 less but only carries the standard warranty. They seem eager to make a sale and I sense I can bring the difference down to $5,000.

I’m looking for some advice on what the best route/option is.

1. Take the $5,000 savings and role with the standard warranty (3.0 Diesel FYI).
2. Use the $5,000 savings to get an extended bumper to bumper.
3. Eat the $5,000 (really it’s $3,200 right now but I believe I can get it to $5,000) and have the piece of mind if something blows up before 200k I’m covered.

I do plan on keeping the truck long term but we all know that can change.

Any insights would be greatly appreciated! 🙏

I’m hoping to pick up one of these options this Sunday.

Are you REALLY gonna keep the truck for 200k miles? Most people don't. If you don't, then the 200k mile warranty is a waste.
@KLA that is definitely the question I keep asking myself. What I know is I’m likely keeping past 100k.

I’m also considering thr big push for electric vehicles by 2030 I don’t know how that’s gonna change what’s offered for non electric vehicles. Which would make me definitely want to keep this truck.

I was at my Dealer yesterday and overheard a conversation with one of the other service advisors speaking to an aftermarket warranty company. They would not authorize the dealer to open up the engine until all of the proof of Maintenace required (fluid changes) were performed has been submitted for their review and approval. From what they have told me over the years not just GM but Ford, BMW and MB they are very difficult to deal with.

I also agree with securityguy. You should also be able to negotiate for a gm 100k warranty for <$2500. But having the two dealers definitely gives you some negotiating leverage by getting the dealers to compete.
