Oil Consumption

It's hard to beat Walmart for oil prices. Wix is a great filter. The stock Delco one is made by Wix, I think! I use oil filter pliers for a non slip easy removal. I usually buy the filter at O'Reilly since I take my dirty oil there for disposal. O'Reilly will have the filter pliers as well. Oil type is a preference. I like Mobile !. Oil type is a bag worms argument that no -one ever wins. For a 6.2 liter, be sure it's Dexos 1 rated.
Thanks for the recommendations. I’m also a fan of Mobile 1. Will check out the filter pliers. Thanks!

Yep, I get my oil at O'Reilly too and if you have the Walmart app they'll match prices with Walmart so long as it's in stock at Walmart. If O'Reilly doesn't have what I need, I buy at Walmart.

The Mobil 1 212 filter is supposed to be compatible, but it's shorter than the AC Delco PF 63. I've cut open a few of the PF 63s and they seem well made with lots of filter media. I'll probably stick with them.

This is an easy truck to do oil changes. Plenty of room to crawl under and the drain and filter are easy to access. Only get a small amount of oil on the hardware under filter.

I just cut this filter open and the media looked good and fairly clean at 8500 miles. That's the 3rd change. I could see a couple of shiny flakes, but nothing like the first change at 1500 miles.

I am going to be doing all of my oil changes and tire rotations for many of the reasons that you guys are discussing. Are there any recommendations on sites with the best deal on oil and filters or just use a local auto store?

And has anyone found a good oil filter wrench that does not slip when removing the filter like the traditional ones with a metal band that is adjustable?
I'll buy it at local places when they run sales. Places like Advanced, autozone, ect. But actually every one on the ZR2 has been from Amazon. They had the oil on sale for like 22 bucks per 5qt jug. Ac Delco filters were around 8 bucks. I stocked up and haven't bought. anymore yet. Keep in mind you should keep your receipts while under warranty. Plus side with online is you can pull up the invoice anytime you want. If you buy local just scan the receipt with your phone and save it for your records.

I have pliers, strap wrenches and sockets that I've accumulated over time. The metal strap wrench actually seems to work best to me on the ZR2. If you did it last. It shouldn't be that tight anyway.

Old thread but I guess you can count me in with the consumption group. Checked this morning after almost 2K miles and I am almost 1/2qt low. Freaking sucks. I haven't had a vehicle consume oil since a 2007 Tahoe I had. When I killed AFM in it though it stopped using oil.

I haven't revisited this in a while, but last.time I checked it didn't seem to be losing much.

I do know that the dipstick in my ZR2 does not register full with 8 quarts like it does on the Tahoe with same motor. So I add 0.5 more to make me feel good.

This is my first oil change since purchasing it so I looked earlier on a few times and it was good. Decided today to look again and was 1/2qt low. Guess I'll keep an eye on it for a while to see if it continues to drop. When I filled mine up though, it was spot on.

So, I have always checked my oil first thing in the morning before running the engine. For giggles, I decided to check it again since taking my kids to school. Damn thing is spot on the money full. Maybe I am not using any after all.

That's what I notice, for some reason my ZR2 is really particular about how it's sitting. That's why i added the extra. 5 quarts, cause then it always seems to be at the top of the dipstick range.

Tahoe sits next to it in the driveway and never seems off......LOL.

It was sitting in the same place. First time I checked it was before starting for the day. Second time was about an hour and a half after taking the kids to school. Granted I understand things expand when warm but wouldn’t think the oil would change that much.

Add another 0.5 q..... . Thank me later

Hi Guys, my truck too, but, in addition as a result it's fowling the plugs and I'm picking up a little miss. Have you experienced this too? Dealer here is being told by manufacturer its often normal for the first 10k ffs.

That sounds like a different issue with the motor. I woukd have the dealer check it out.

G'day, yes been to dealer. Not enough of a miss to throw a code, but I can feel it it idle. Have been on a drive with laptop plugged in and he can see random misfires across some cylinders. Its not burning a lot of oil, but the plugs are fowled. They just keep cleaning them. I'm in Australia so the local right hand drive conversion crowd who warrant them are the ones asking to wait till 10kms i.e. kicking it down the road. I walked into it eyes open. My last Silverado (06) was converted locally too and had zero issues with it. Its very frustrating.

Hope I'm wrong but that sounds like the behavior I noticed on my 5.3 just before the lifters failed.

Yep, if dealer didn't find anything else, that's the logical conclusion given the propensity for failures, also bad fuel pump cotorol module and the dreaded crank/con rod bearing failure.

I'm at the dealer for my freebie oil change. My service advisor made a note of my consumption which I've estimated is about 1 quart in 2000 miles. He looked up the spec and it said 1 quart per 2000 miles is current spec for this motor. He said 1 quart per 3000 miles was considered normal in the past for the 6.2L.

I'm not terribly concerned at this point, just something I've noticed in last 6 weeks. My wife's 6.2L.Tahoe seems spot on full with similar use and miles.
There’s no way 1 quart consumption in 2000 miles is normal. Sounds like BS to me.

Talk to your service advisor. Mine looked it up on his computer right when I was standing there.

Total BS. I drove for 5K miles at a clip before each oil change and never lost any oil at all.
Thats bullshit cause I got two of them that sit sxs and one used oil on a specific test i performed. I specifically did a 2000 mile oil change after a 1600 mile cross country trip and I posted the pictures of the jugs after I captured the oil.

Remember some guys use their truck for more than trips to the grocery store.
