Lifter Tap?

I haven't heard a tap again since. Maybe it was just due to it being colder that day. Beats me. I think someone on here once said an engine will either go or blow. After that, I stopped worrying about it so much.
My tapping was intermittent too. Did notice the misfire.
If it's just lifters then not too big a deal.
If they see camshaft damaged then it gets ugly
Next time this happens I drive it till it stops and get a new motor.
Already looking into the HD so I don't have to deal with this

Dont the HD have other problems to deal with? Seems like everything does these days.

Engine parts expand and shrink as temp vary, but as it is getting cooler now I too occasionally hear the random tap upon cold starts until the engine warms up to temp....IMO it not uncommon and normal as long as it is not a constant rhythm and very loud. As long as it goes away as the engine warms you should be good. Don't go full throttle when the engine is cold. The 6.2 is a big engine and take a lot of oil that needs to warm up. So does the transmission ....If it gets louder or becomes a consistent noise... then take it in right away!

Mine has approximately 26,800 miles so far. You either get a good engine or a bad one and some of that depends on using a quality oil and doing regular changes at lower intervals than 5k or 10k, more like 2.5 to 3k....as well as a quality filter. Take care of your engine and it will take care of you 👍

I don’t do 3k oil changes but I change it around 5k. Have used pennzoil platinum and wix for years. Have always taken care of them as they are too expensive to ignore.

On another heated thread, we all agreed that Crico Corn Oil 40w70 was the best for its organic qualities and as a bonus after you drain it you can cook with it to recycle ♻️.

That’s just nasty lol

You fellas would have a head explosion if you had to listen to some of the mystery noises that come out of a Duramax
Funny enough, I have never owned a diesel vehicle. Always thought about it but it just never happened. Much like owning a black vehicle. Always wanted one and just never did it lol.

Never owned a diesel either. Wouldn't work for me for my short drives.
Owned a black vehicle though. NEVER again. Looks great when they are clean.
Even the black hood cowl drives me nuts trying to keep it clean.

Short drives is bad for a diesel? So I assume driving the kids to school and coming back home would not be good lol.

The 6.6L Duramax motor is one of the most reliable in history and so is the Allison transmission. You're not likely to have motor or transmission issues, but have some risk on the emissions systems (as do all major brands with DEF and DPF systems).

Your also gonna have the same electronic and trim issues, which are plentiful. If your gonna chunk down $10k+ for a big boy, you should be towing or there's no sense to it.

Heard the tapping again today (not cold outside since it was in the mid 70s). I may have a few in a row but I think the max in a row is three then it may be one or two and such. Giving it throttle does not seem to increase the rate of sound, it actually doesnt make it at all. So guess Ill just drive it til it blows or decides it really wants to make noise more often than here and there. Good thing for warranties :D

I was supposed to get my truck back today.
I called and service guy says they need to remove valve cover and then maybe the head and also get Chevy approval
Um that's what you told me a week ago.
I didn't get a loaner since I could use friend's cars. Chevy only gives $48.46 or something like that and I pay the rest.
Obviously someone dropped the ball.
I get a call and they give me a Malibu loaner.
Have no idea when the truck will be done

And this is part of why everyone hates dealerships. They never have a sense of urgency when they hold something youre paying on.

You're exactly right. When the lifters went on my 2015 Silverado 5.3l, the dealer I bought it from replaced the motor under warranty. At first they told me it would only be about a week and a half to complete everything, but it took 2 weeks to get approval from the warranty company then another 2 1/2 weeks to replace the motor. So, for 4 1/2 weeks I had to ride my motorcycle to work every day, which normally wouldn't be bad, but it was at the beginning on November at the time and the weather didn't exactly cooperate. It was a long 4 1/2 weeks of calling the dealer service department trying to get my truck back. And like you said, they really didn't care that I didn't have my vehicle that I was paying on for that long.

I actually brought the truck in for the software update and left it over night so they could hear the tap on cold start.
When they called me on friday to tell me the bad news I asked if they did the update.
Nope, we will wait till the truck is fixed.
So the truck has been there for over a week and nobody can plug their laptop in and gitrdun?
I guess I do my work differently

I need lifters and maybe camshaft. It was in the other posts.
They don't know the extent of the problem until they start removing parts
