Fuel, Air, and Cabin Filter

I hit 10k miles and finally got to change my fuel filter. My DIC still showed 32% fuel filter life, but I usually change at 10k. The filter was pretty dirty, but I'm sure it would do 15k. I think it looked similar to other filters I've cut open in the past, but there is definitely less filter media.

The canister filter is really easy to access just in front of the fuel tank, but the whole assembly is plastic and feels kind of cheap. There is a water drain valve on the bottom, but I've never had water in mine. You need a 36 mm socket to remove the canister and I was suprised how hard it was to turn both on and off, except the first couple threads. There is a lot of fuel that splashes out and even though I had a pan it splashed hard in the bottom and got on my driveway. Should have laid down my mat first. I think it drains back from the lines to the fuel rail. Older Duramaxes didn't puke out any fuel. There are four orings and two have to be changed, the other two are on the filter. Grease them as using just the fuel isn't enough to get them to slide easily. Some people report issues with binding or twisting. You'll need a pick or something to remove the old rings, especially the small one. Torque it on at 25 NM, that's not a lot, but it's turning hard after a few threads.

Overall, I give this a 10 for access, a 7 for ease, but only a 5 for durability. I see a lot of people having to replace their canister or the whole pump assembly cause the crappy plastic gets damaged.

Also replaced the air filter that was pretty dirty and full of honey bees from the hives near our farm in ND. Also plenty of dust and sand particles in bottom of air box

Cabin filter wasn't horrible, but lots of fine dust and sand. They want $26 for a new one. Walmart has Super Tech filters for $10. Gonna buy that next time.

Also what a pain in the ass to find AC Delco filters, no stock anywhere. Got them from three different places and ordered two of them. The fuel filter I got on Amazon for $38, most places wanted $75. It's worth about $10.

I usually get them locally at O'Reilly or Autozone, sometime Walmart. . Also order from Amazon.

I have used Rock Auto before, but not regularly.
 
I forgot to mention the fuel priming process once you replace the filter. You need to cycle the ignition button twice by holding the button down for several seconds without pressing the brake. This will allow the truck to go into accessory mode and the DIC and infotainment system will light up and the fuel pump will run, but truck won't start. Do this at least twice to fill the fuel canister and lines.

The first time the pump ran quietly with just it's normal humming sound. The second time it made a lot of gurgling noises. I decided to try it a third time, since it made more noise the second time, but the pump didn't turn on again. I assumed it was primed at that point, then started the truck. It did stumble a bit when it rolled over, so there was still some air in the line. I let it run a couple minutes and it ran smoothly.
