My father always says every 3000 don’t care what the manufacturer says , better safe than sorry may cost a little more but want the final result

I’ve done first thousand and every 5 for years. Synthetic. That first dump at 1k was some dirty stuff. Really believe that break in change is critical.

The newer LT engines have a large sump compared to the LS’s. (6 vs 8 qt’s) the fluid should be in much better shape from the increase in volume alone.

Enjoying this thread. Glad I am in this group. I took my 2024 Bison in for the first oil change at 1200 miles and the service writer looked at me like I was crazy. I was planning to do my 2nd oil change at 5200 (4000 after the first), but now you guys have me thinking about 4500 instead...

I've got an oil analysi thread with all my samples posted and a few others posted there. 5000k still looks pretty good for people that drive "normally". The biggest difference I seen was the oil gets much darker at 5k than 3k and you begin to see more decline in additives that protect wear.

I decide 3k was better for me cause i drive my truck harder, live where there is extreme heat, do a little towing and offroading. My average mpg is barely over 12 mpg, while my wife’s 6.2L is 15.5 mpg. So I know I'm pushing mine harder, so more maintenance is required.

Also they mentioned oil consumption in that video. Said "normal" was considered 1 quart per 1000 miles. My service advisor said that it used to be 1 quart per 3k miles, but these motors are now 1 quart per 2000. He said that's also factored into how they get extended charge intervals assuming you've added new oil during the run interval.

My truck uses some oil, I determined it to be about 1/2 quart per 3k, maybe a tad more. That's another reason I decided just to do the change, as it's not much work and I top it off at 8 quarts. My wife's doesn't use any or very little at 5k.

Also my dipstick doesn’t register completely full after 8 quarts, but my wife's rig does.... not sure why, but it must sit differently.

Interesting... My 2018 ZL1 Camaro with the supercharged 6.2L burns about 1qt of oil every 5000 miles. So hearing that the 6.2L in the Silverado does something similar is honestly not that surprising...
